So, this past Sunday I had children’s church at my church and the lesson I chose to teach was about being disciples. It got me thinking about how everyone if you are a Christian, you are to be a disciple for God. That means we should be going out and telling others about the goodness of God. About how great he is and what he had done for you in your life.
I read them all of Matthew 28 which is about Jesus in the tomb and rising from the dead three days later and the angles came to Mary Magdalene and the other Mary while they were going to visit Jesus’s tomb, and the angles told them he was not here for he has risen. The angles tell them to go and tell the others meaning the disciples that followed Jesus. Then in Matthew 28:19-20 was, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” This Great Commission is not just for pastors or missionaries; it is for all believers.
As followers of Christ, we are called to be His disciples—to live in a way that reflects His love, truth, and grace. This was Jesus’s final command to His followers.
What Does It Mean to Be a Disciple?
Being a disciple means more than just believing in Jesus; it means following Him daily, learning from His Word, and striving to live a life that honors Him. A disciple seeks to grow in faith, serve others, and share the gospel so that more people can come to know Christ. We are to show love and kindness to everyone even when it is hard.

How to Live as a Disciple for God
- Seek a Deep Relationship with God
Discipleship starts with our personal relationship with God. Spend time in prayer, read the Bible regularly, and allow the Holy Spirit to guide your heart and actions. A strong foundation in faith will help us stay steadfast even in difficult times. I know from personal experience that keeping a Bible reading and prayer time is difficult, but I have also learned recently that when you do have time each day it makes you feel and act so much better. - Live by Example
Our actions speak louder than words. When we live with love, integrity, and faithfulness, we reflect Christ to those around us. Whether in our workplaces, families, or communities, we should strive to be a light for Him. People are watching how we react to challenges, how we treat others, and how we prioritize our time and resources. People are always watching Christian because they know we are supposed to be different. - Share the Gospel Boldly
Spreading the good news of Jesus Christ is an essential part of discipleship. This doesn’t always mean preaching from a pulpit—it can be as simple as sharing your testimony, offering encouragement, or praying with someone in need. The gospel is powerful and life-changing, and when we share it with others, we participate in God’s plan for salvation. I also know this can be challenging but just ask God for guidance and strength and he will lead the way for you. - Serve Others with Love
Jesus set the example of servant leadership. As disciples, we should seek to serve others—whether through acts of kindness, volunteering, or supporting those in need. True discipleship is about putting others before ourselves and demonstrating Christ’s love through action. Jesus washed the feet of His disciples to show that leadership is about serving, not status. - Disciple Others
Just as Jesus mentored His disciples, we are called to disciple others. This means walking alongside new believers, teaching them God’s Word, and encouraging them in their faith journey. Discipleship is about multiplication—helping others grow so they, in turn, can disciple others. A simple way to start is by leading a Bible study, mentoring a younger believer, or even just being available to answer questions about faith. Over time this will become easier for you to do. - Stay Faithful in Trials
Being a disciple is not always easy. There will be challenges, opposition, and moments of doubt. However, Jesus reminds us in John 16:33, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” A true disciple remains faithful even when the journey is tough, trusting that God is working all things for His glory. Also, trials will help you grow your faith and make your relationship stronger. - Rely on the Holy Spirit
We cannot be effective disciples on our own strength. The Holy Spirit empowers, convicts, and guides us in our walk with Christ. By staying connected to God through prayer and worship, we allow the Holy Spirit to work in and through us, giving us the courage and wisdom to fulfill our calling.

Embracing the Call
Being a disciple for God is a lifelong journey, not a one-time event. It requires commitment, faith, and a willingness to step out of our comfort zones. But the reward is eternal knowing that we are part of God’s mission to bring His love and salvation to the world. So, just like the name of my blog a girl on a mission we as Christians have the same mission which is spreading the Great Commision and to be disciples for Him but for a lot of us He gives us other missions to be disciples such as starting Bible study groups, small groups, Christian blogs and so much more.
Let’s embrace our calling as disciples of Christ, living each day with purpose, passion, and a heart devoted to God. How can you take the next step in your discipleship journey today?
